There are currently few examples in medicine of a new discipline which occupies the centre stage than that of Travel Medicine as reflected by the number of textbooks and manuals published during the last few years. Travel Medicine encompasses a wide range of topics from the prevention of disease and health of international travellers to more exotics such as wilderness medicine, altitude medicine, aviation and space medicine. Large scale immigration and the movement of refuges and asylum-seekers across countries and continents as a result, to a large extent, of economic reasons but also political factors, have become a feature of life during the last three or four decades. Such population movements influence profoundly the epidemiology of disease, facilities and natural resources, environment and they also have significant impact on demographic, economic, technological and cultural factors.
