At present, there is no consensus on the maximum allowable limits for impurity elements, such as Pb, Zn, Sn, Si, Cr, Be, Bi and Se, in aluminum bronze castings. These impurities could adversely affect the ductility and promote cracking duringwelding and heat treatment. This work was carried out to evaluate the effect of such impurity elements on the mechanical properties, heat treatment and weldability of two most popular aluminum bronze alloys, namely, C95800 and C95400.This paper deals with the effect of a few of these elements (Pb, Zn, Sn, Bi and Se) on their mechanical properties. When these impurity elements were added alone to alloy C95800, the specified mechanical properties could be met, in almost all the cases.However, the % elongation was reduced to just above the minimum specified value. Alloy C95400 exhibited high yield strength but very poor ductility. This is probably because of the high aluminum and nickel contents. A different composition with relatively lower aluminum and nickel contents may have to be selected to reevaluate the effect of impurity elements on the mechanical properties.
