Back in the old days there was only one way to get your anchor up on a trailer boat - pull it up by hand! It was a pretty slow task, especially if you had a 251b anchor, eight metres of chain and a strong headwind. Then in the mid-1980s along came electric anchor winches that suited trailer boats. On my dad's boat we fitted a Lucas anchor winch available from New Zealand that featured a large capstan protruding through the deck with a large gearbox and motor mounted under the deck. This unit had a foot-operated switch that allowed the winch to operate in one direction. You wrapped the rope twice around the drum and with tension on the rope it lifted the anchor from the depths.
