Mass colored PP/TPO parts for automotive exteriors

Today's automotive suppliers are concerned on one hand with trends to more colorful and design oriented car body parts, which are realized by full-part paintings and on the other hand economic issues. The mass coloration of non-black plastic parts offers the advantage to realize colors and silver effects at lower cost levels than conventional painting. Without painting, several obstacles have to be considered. Experience and extensive test series are necessary to obtain a uniform tint, especially for metallic effects. Furthermore: To guarantee an attractive and durable appearance of the color effect and of the plastic surface, the light and UV-stabilization package needs to be carefully elaborated and trimmed to the requirements of the final exterior body part. In collaboration with a car manufacturer and a compounder the consequent application of selection principles for pigments and stabilization additives finally led to the commercialization of red and chrome colored parts.
