Total tobacco - expressing fine cut for RYO (roll-your-own) in cigarette equivalents - has brought a niche into the mainstream. RYO cigarettes have been growing volumes while conventional cigarettes have been generally losing volumes so combining the two canmake results look less negative. RYO has certainly come in from the cold: the best selling RYO brand in Europe is a flagship cigarette brand extension. Is it moving out of its European heartland? Is it just about price? How big is the price advantage anyway? RYO is fine cut tobacco intended for use in a self rolled cigarette. The sametobacco is offered for Make Your Own (MYO) where a small rolling machine may be used. Pipe tobacco may also be used for RYO, the advantage being that it is usually cheaper, being generally taxed at a lower rate. In recent years the RYO market has been occasionally distorted by use of pipe tobacco for RYO (and MYO), the best examples being Poland and the US.
