Following an extensive review of the scientific literature , the results of in vitro investigations of the anti-microbial effects of ethanol extracts of propolis are described. A dose-dependent bactericidal or bacteriostatic effect against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, at concentrations of less than 1 mg/ml was observed. In contrast, aerobic gram-negative bacteria were inhibited at a concentration greater than 2.8 mg/ml. For pathogenic fungi, the greatest inhibitory effect was observed for Trichophyton metagrophytes (0.175 mg/ml) and Candida albicans (0.35 mg/ml), and for Malassezia pachydermatis a concentration of 2.8 mg/ml was necessary. In the case of viruses uses such as vesicular stomatitis virus, equine herpes virus I and bovine leukosis virus, their dose-dependent replication was inhibited at concentrations greater than 5 mu g/ml. Up to concentrations of 125 mu g per ml of nutrient medium, no cytopathogenic effects were observed in the FLK/BLV cell line which produced a continual culture of bovine leukosis virus. Ar concentrations greater thaw 5 mu g pei mi, the bovine leukosis proteins gp 51 and p 24 were decreased, dose-dependently. Cell cultures were variously sensitive to the propolis extract. Cytotoxic effects in the bat lung cell line were observed at a concentration greater than I mu g per mi after 48 hours incubation. Such effects were detected at concentrations gl ea tel than 50 mu g/ml in the chicken fibroblast cell line, the equine der-mis and FLK/BLV cell lines. A remarkable finding was a stimulatory effect on the proliferation of the human keratinocyte cell line at concentrations ranging from 1 to 10 mu g per ml, and for the FLK/BLV cell line from I to 2.5 mu g per ml.
