Current methods for stallion semen cryopreservation: a survey.

A survey was made of methods used in the freezing of stallion spermatozoa. Questionnaires were sent to 25 individuals/laboratories (in 14 countries) involved in freezing stallion semen for commercial purposes; 21 responses (10 countries) were received. The results showed that standardized prefreezing, freezing, thawing and post-thawing procedures were not used. The number of mares used to determine fertility was, in most cases, too small to provide meaningful results. Multicentred collaborative studies are recommended to standardize protocols and to carry out research on fertility rates.
