Jane Klose was born in England, but later moved to South Africa where she got married and raised her family in Cape Town. Jane's skills and achievements were numerous and unusual. She qualified as a dentist at Guy's Hospital in London (1962) and worked in Cape Town from the mid-60s as the only female dentist at that time. She also made furniture, designed and drew up professional plans for alterations to her home, and could draw and paint. By chance, she became interested in archaeology and studied at the University of Cape Town (UCT), being awarded a Master's Degree in 1997. When she attained her Master's degree, Jane was already widely known and respected across the international network of specialists in the history of ceramics. Archaeology was thus her second career, which she began in her late 40s. Within a few years she had earned international respect for her expertise in ceramics manufactured from Jingdezhen to Stoke-on-Trent.
