Face up to bereavement: the hidden costs of euthanasia

Most vets report receiving more appreciation after euthanasias than following life-restoring treatments. The author explains why many practices' care of clients during an animal's end-of-life stage may be far from optimal.UNLESS YOUR PRACTICE has an evidence-based policy for the end-of-life stage, you are probably in the process of incurring turnover losses (excluding VAT) of about ￡55,000 per full-time small animal vet (Figure 1; Table 1). This article takes a scientific approach to how such losses happen and outlines ways to minimise them.
