Sakata are best known in the UK for their broccoli lines, so it comes as no surprise to see a number of new introductions at their Brassica Open day at Sutterton in October. Of particular interest is Aquiles (pronounced Achilles like the Greek hero) which is aimed at maturing in early June. The cycle time is typically between 65 and 70 days, although this can be closer to 80 days for crops grown from early spring plantings. "It's a week earlier than the standards," says Sakata's Sales Manager StuartCox. Aquiles works well for supply to the British market. Aimed at extending the other end of the UK season is Spiridon, another new introduction.
