Hamburg Joins loM As Foreign Secretary

Margaret Hamburg lets little time pass before moving into her next position in the pharma and healthcare research and policy arena; the recently retired FDA commissioner joins the Institute of Medicine as foreign secretary, a part-time position. The health arm of the National Academy of Sciences said Hamburg, who retired from FDA on April 3, is appointed to a term through June 30,2019, succeeding Jo Ivey Boufford, the New York Academy of Medicine president who was loM foreign secretary for nearly nine years. Hamburg, whose father David Hamburg served as loM president from 1975 to 1980, has been an institute member since 1994, chairing its Global Health board (2005-2009) and serving as an loM Council member (2005-2009).
