ASTRONOMERS IN THE LATE 18th century speculated about the existence of a missing planet presumably located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The main argument in support of such a claim, first formulated by Johannes Kepler in 1596, was based on the observation that the distances between planets are spaced of Palermo, Sicily, on January 1, 1801.
