Dr Edmund Hartnack et Cie (Successors to G. Oberhauser) Paris and Potsdam

The work of the nineteenth-century microscope manufacturer Edmund Hartnack is reviewed in the context of contemporary microscopical development. The products of his workshops in Paris and Potsdam are then considered in more detail. The supplier of more than 25,000 instruments, his numerous customers included Charles Darwin and Robert Koch, and his water-immersion objectives brought about an important advance in the optical capability of the microscope.
