An examination of the Defence Organs of the Adult firefly

Amongst insects, members of the genus Lampyridae defend themselves by discharging a liquid which predators find distasteful. The system is known as reflex bleeding. In this paper are described, for the first time, the position and morphology of the organs which appear responsible for such a discharge in the adult male firefly Lampyris noctiluca.
