Soil Association investigations suggest that the disposal of the 20 million gallons of sheep dip solution used by farmers each year is one of the most damaging and least regulated threats which agriculture poses to the enviroment. The report puts forward five policy recommendations (see below). Given that there are around 90,000 sheep farmers in the country, there could be 50,000 dip baths, but no-one knows exactly. Their location, known only to the Ministry of Agriculture, is classified informationunder the Agricultural Censuses Act, and the National Rivers Authority, now the Environmental Protection Agency, does not have access to it.
