Nosocomial transmission of community-associated meticiilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: an emerging threat

Nicola Zetola and colleagues1 have described the emerging threat of meticiilin-resistant Stapbylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection acquired in the community by patients without previous health-care contact. Compared with health-care-associated MRSA, community-associated strains are typically susceptible to most antistaphylococcal antimicrobials, have a more diverse genetic background, carry small versions (usually types IV or V) of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), often produce the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), and can be highly virulent.
