Community-acquired MRSA: an under-recognised problem

A recent study in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows a dramatic rise in the number of infections caused by community-acquired meticillin-resis-tant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Among 389 cases of community-onset skin and soft tissue infection seen in the Atlanta area, MRSA accounted for 279 (72%). Senior author Henry Blumberg (Emory University School of Medicine and Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, GA, USA) says: "We have seen an explosion of community-acquired MRSA infections among the urban population.
