Framingham Risk for PLWH in an Infectious Disease Practice

X he recent publication on cardiovascular risk assessment among persons living with HIV (PLWH) is very interesting (Burke, Nelson, Kwong, & Cook, 2012). Burke and colleagues (2012) described the systematic cardiovascular assessment using the Fra-mingham Risk (FR) for PLWH in an infectious disease practice. Indeed, there is no doubt that the cardiovascular problem is a main problem for PLWH, similar to the general population. Focusing on using FR, there are several attempts to propose a newer and better technique for risk assessment although it is not well implemented and accepted at present (Tzoulaki, Liberopoulos, & Ioannidis, 2009). Practitioners have to follow and update the knowledge on this aspect. In addition, the flaw of FR should also be mentioned. The big problem of using FR in scoring can be seen in the cases with diabetes mellitus (McEwan et al., 2004), which can be another common problem in PLWH.
