Observations of periphyton in velhala lake of jalgaon district, maharashtra

In the present study 105 species under 53 genera were recorded among the periphyton of Velhala lake. Thirteen species of green algae, 50 of blue green algae, 32 of diatoms and 11 species of euglenoids were observed in Velhala lake during June 1998 toMay 1999. Periphyton communities are useful means for nutrient removal from polluted water bodies. At times the algal periphyton are so immensely grown as mats on stones in the littoral zones that their dominant role as primary producers in an ecosystemcan not be over-looked. Some of the periphyton may also be recognised as good bioindicators of water pollution.
