The FDA has proposed a change to its regulation on the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in epinephrine metered-dose inhalers (MDIs). The rule would remove the "essential use" designation that allows the use of CFCs in these medical devices. The Clean Air Act permits CFCs to be used in medical products if the use is determined to be essential by the FDA. Most MDIs available in the US once contained CFCs but have recently been reformulated or are in the process of being reformulated to use other substances as propellants.
