The reality of hand hygiene compliance in two Finnish hospitals based on watching and analysing two hospital reality television series.

Hand hygiene by healthcare workers (HCWs) is considered a basic measure of hospital infection control. However, numerous observational studies have shown that compliance by HCWs with recommended hand hygiene is low (19-30%). We studied the compliance of HCWs with the hand hygiene guidelines in two Finnish hospitals by analysing two non-fictional reality hospital television (TV) series. The first season of the TV series Sairaala ('Hospital') consisted of 48 episodes, of 30 min each, filmed in the central hospital of Tampere University Hospital. Sairaalan syke ('Hospital Beat') was filmed in Jorvi Hospital, a part of Helsinki University Central Hospital, and consisted of twelve 30 min episodes. Both series were filmed in 2008 and shown at prime time during the week. In both series, several doctors' and nurses' daily routines were followed in casualty, wards and intensive care units (ICUs).
