The learning curve for successful radical prostatectomy (in terms of preventing prostate cancer recurrence) is steep and only begins to plateau when a surgeon has completed about 250 operations, according to a new study. Researchers calculated the effect of surgical experience on recurrence by reviewing records relating to 7,765 radical prostatectomies performed by 72 surgeons at four US centres between 1987 and 2003. Prostate cancer recurrence was defined as a serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level of 0.4 ng/ml or more, followed by a subsequent higher PSA level, after adjustment for established clinical and tumour characteristics.
