摘要

The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes [1]. In Australia, as in other Western countries, the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome is rising [2]. Although rarely recognised, components of the metabolic syndrome may also have diverse effects on bone, including influences on weight, adipocytokines, hyperglycae-mia, dyslipidaemia, hypertension and drug exposures. Body weight [3] and body fat mass [4] have been associated with enhanced bone mineral density (BMD) because of mechanical loading on the skeleton [5] or the actions of a mediator between adipose tissue and bone [6].
