First there was water and then there was nutrient. A simple hydroponic school experiment describes how plants feed. My 13-year-old granddaughter Brooke had to do a project for school and came to ask me what on earth she could do. I thought for a whileand not understandably came up with the suggestion that she did something about hydroponic growi ng. "What about how todays hydroponics got started?" "Oh yuk," she retorted. "That doesn't sound very interesting." Well, I thought it did, and I had to convince Brooke that she should give it a go. The challenge was on. First, I had to somehowdescribe how the whole process came about and then try to suggest some ideas as to how this could be simplified enough to be sensibly expl ained in a low-cost project that would hopefully impress the class.
