Dental erosion is a chemical process that involves the dissolution of enamel and dentin by acids not derived from bacteria when the surrounding aqueous phase is undersaturated with respect to tooth mineral. This causes a softening of the outer layer of enamel and dentin which, in combination with mechanical wear (abrasion and attrition), can result in erosive tooth wear and irreversible loss of enamel and dentin. As part of the normal physiological wear processes, it would be expected that some loss of enamel and dentin would occur over a lifetime and this would not generally be considered pathological. However, most experts believe that during the last decade there has been a significant increase in erosive tooth wear, particularly among adolescents. This may have significant implications for the long-term viability of the dentition, particularly as teeth are now retained for longer periods of time and life expectancy has increased.
