Bacteriological, Molecular and Antibiotic Sensitivity Profiles of Pasteurella Multocida from Bovine and Rabbits

This study reports the isolation of Pasteurella multocida from the nasal swabs of apparently healthy animals and from heart blood and pooled tissues from animals suspected to have died of pasteurellosis. Eighteen isolates from bovines and four isolates from rabbits of P. multocida were identified on the basis of cultural, morphological and biochemical characteristics. The biochemical tests showed variability and thus PM-PCR was used for rapid and specific identification of P. multocida. Capsular typing of isolates by capsular-specific multiplex PCR demonstrated two capsular types (A and B). In vitro antibiotic sensitivity test revealed that all the isolates were sensitive to gentamicin, tetracycline, erythromycin, enrofloxacin and spectinomycin. Based on the antibiotic sensitivity test, Gentamicin was recommended as drug of choice.
