Study of peak milk yield and peak day in Gir cattle.

Data from 211 Gir cows at Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust Dairy Farm, Indore, India, covering a period of 28 years (1960-1987), were collected for this investigation. The peak daily yield and peak days to attain it were 10.048+-0.100 kg and 47.373+-0.832 days respectively. The period, season and parity effects were significant. The least-squares mean of first lactation peak milk yield was 8.946+-0.162 kg. The h2 estimates by half-sib correlation method of peak daily yield and peak days were 0.281+-0.060 and 0.851+-0.336 respectively.
