Effect of planting season on the growth behaviour of early maturing sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrid complex) under sub-tropical conditions

An experiment was conducted during 2005-07 at Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, to study the effect of planting season on the growth behaviour of early maturing sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrid complex) variety in terms of dry matter accumulation, cane and sugar yields. In autumn-planted crop, biomass and sugar accumulation per unit area and time were 0.40 and 0.037 tonnes/ha/day, respectively, while in spring-planted crop, these were 0.33 and 0.027 tonnes/ha/day. Comparative analysis of autumn and spring crops revealed the impact of climatic regime on the overall performance of the crop. It was found that autumn crop which gets unfavourable environment during initial growth phase, yields better than the spring crop which gets favourable environment during initial growth phase.
