An experiment was conducted in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, during the rainy (kharif) seasons of 2003 and 2004 to evaluate the response of rice (O. sativa) cultivars and super rice cultures to anaerobic sowing. Three cultivars (145, BTS 24 and BG 1639) and 2 super rice cultures (Super Rice 6 and Super Rice 7) were subjected to anaerobic wet sowing or line transplanting. For the cultivars, anaerobic wet sowing was on a par with line transplanting in terms of growth, yield attributes (plant height, number of tillers and panicles/m2, number of filled grains, and 1000-grain weight) and grain yield. The Super rice cultures did not establish under anaerobic wet sowing. Anaerobic sowing was superior to line transplanting in terms of net returns and benefit:cost ratio, specific energy, and energy ratio..
