Pear sucker (Psylla pyricola) is a serious pest of pear and has very damaging effects on pear crops in the UK if left unchecked. Accepted conventional chemical control methods are difficult over a long summer period and most of the chemicals availablefor use in pear crops for controlling pear sucker will also kill the best predators of the pest. Although there is a short term gain and control of pear sucker is acheived, in the long term pear sucker repopulates the orchard more quickly than the predators, and overall control is lost.
