Within the last six months, the citrus nurseries have been exposed to citrus canker and citrus greening, which threatens the future availability of nursery trees. Since May, approximately 4.1 million or 62 percent of the nursery inventory has been destroyed due to canker exposure. In September, citrus greening was detected in south Florida. Citrus greening, a systemic bacterial disease transmitted by a psyllid insect, is considered one of the most devastating citrus diseases worldwide. Thus, exposure of citrus nurseries to exotic diseases and their vectors has reached a critical level of concern.
