RECENT OCCURRENCES OF NITIDULA FLAVOMACULATA ROSSI (COLEOPTERA: NITIDULIDAE) IN THE INTERIOR OF THE UNITED STATES

Nitidulidae, commonly called sap beetles, are primarily mycetophagous (Habeck 2002). Tomberlin (2008) notes 2,500 known species in Nitidulidae, with about 200 of those in the USA and Canada. Some species are associated with later stages of decay in mammalian corpses (Reed 1958; Adair and Kondratieff 1996; Tomberlin and Adler 1998; Goddard et al. 2012; Sert et al. 2012); species of Nitidula F. and Omosita Erichson breed in carrion (Habeck 2002). Nitidula flavomaculata Rossi is associated with dry (skeletonized) stages of decomposition (Reed 1958) and has been observed on semi-dried and exposed bones as well (Mifsud and Audisio 2008).
