Double Duty: As soybean growers walk fields and scout for pest problems this summer, they have a rare opportunity to address two concerns simultaneously: rust and aphids
Two years ago, Tom Dillman was caught off-guard when aphids struck his soybean crop, causing extensive damage. The central Iowa grower, based near Grinnell, says that at the time he knew little about the pest and had no idea it was even present in hiscrop, until he piloted a small plane over his fields one day early that August. "We were up a few thousand feet, and there were bugs all over my windshield," recalls Dillman, who farms with his father. "When we got back on the ground, it looked like someone had poured green Kool-Aid all over the front of this white plane we were in."
