Sadao Hattori of the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) proposed a micro fast breeder reactor (FBR). The reactor is 0.8 m m in diameter and 4 m long for reactor, while it is 2.5 m in diameter and 20 m long for reactor vessel.. It can be installed in urban area, and any other place, because it is small in size and very safe, while it permits unmanned operation. Although the reactor was designed a decade ago, the idea has remained as concept only, and no prototype reactor has been constructed. This is because the concept was against basic national policy, hattri says. When a reactor is installed in urban area, it must be extremely safe and must be simple to operate and is of simple maintenance and minimum repair work. If everything are realized as Hattori predicts, the FBR will serve as one of distributed on-site power source effectively.
