WC Fields has often lightened my life with phrases like, 'some weasel stole the cork out of my lunch', and it was my affection for the eccentric comic that drew me to James. James was in his mid-thirties, grossly overweight, and the owner of a face that had the same bulbous, nodular quality as the 'Great Man'. Conversational exchanges with James were, however, frenetic and desultory. To stay in touch with his thought processes you had to tie a knot at the end of any dialogue and hang on.
