Pharmaceutical Society changes CMI guidelines

THE Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) recently made changes to its guidelines on Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) and the Pharmacist. The changes reflect advice obtained by PSA following consultation with an indemnity insurer.Two significant changes to the document have been the inclusion of statements advising the following:* the sponsor-prepared GMI leaflet is the appropriate primary form of medicines information to be provided to consumers; and* withholding CMI leaflets from consumers is not supported.A CMI leaflet is the official document prepared by the sponsor conveying brand-specific medicine information and, pharmacists should not provide alternative forms of medicine information in place of it.
