History of Zaporozhye Automobile Plant (AutoZAZ) - one of the oldest industrial enterprises of Ukraine - dates back to 1863, when the plant started production of agricultural machinery. As time went by, AutoZAZ became one of the largest Soviet production alliances engineering and producing automobiles and spare parts for them. Beginning of car production in Zaporozhye, which is identified with the entire history of Ukrainian car making, originated in 1960, when the first Ukrainian compact car - famous Zaporozhets ZAZ-965 - came off the assembly line of Kommunar Plant (now ZAZ). After the Soviet Union times, during which development of automobile production in Ukraine was not deemed expedient, after a decade-long decline during independence period, Zaporozhye-based automobile giant restored complete production cycle only in 1998. In this very year, a joint venture was established upon production facilities of ZAZ in cooperation with Daewoo Company of Korea. Thanks to financial support of foreign partner, new technologies, unique systems of quality control, engineering novelties brought together with investments, and sequent contribution from the state, Zaporozhye plant entered a new historical stage - the stage of production development and the company's entrance to the international level.
