North American newsprint producers in the West are making a determined effort to raise prices after many months trailing pricing levels realized by suppliers in the East. This week at least four western producers that between them account for more than 1 million tonnes of production capacity announced $40/tonne Sept. 1 increases on 30-lb newsprint, contacts said. Among them are the three largest suppliers based on capacity — Catalyst, Norpac, White Birch (Newberg) — and Blue Heron. Also a supplier in the US South, Boise's DeRidder, LA, mill, told customers it will raise newsprint prices $25/tonne on Aug. 1, sources said.
