Gloomy predictions about international newsprint demand during earnings conference calls by several newsprint producing companies including Resolute Forest Products and Tembec are playing out, with statistics from the Pulp and Paper Products Council (PPPC) showing growing pressure in export markets that North American newsprint makers rely on. Exports in the second quarter represented 40% of total newsprint volume for Resolute, North America's largest newsprint maker, compared with the company's 2013 average of 44%. But last month, offshore volumes for North America as a whole represented only 31% of total volumes and were 16% lower than a year ago — more than twice their 7.1% year-to-date average decline, according to PPPC data.
