My interest in 'scollies' (Asplenium scolopendrium or A.s.) started around the early 1980s when I was in the garden of a well-known plantsman who, apart from many flowering plants, also grew a few very choice ferns, one of which was a really beautifulspecimen of A.s. 'Crispum' Up until then I had never seen this particular variety and I expressed my admiration of it. Without further conversation, he took his spade and dug up a smaller, but otherwise identical plant, which he presented to me. I later found that it was the very special 'Crispum Bolton's Nobile' (below).
