Insect-pest control in wheat and barley

The common insect-pests attacking wheat and barley are aphids, termites, pink stem borer, armyworm, Gram pod borer and brown mite. Their correct identification application of insecticides can greatly reduce the quantum of losses.Every year wheat crop in Punjab suffers serious grain yield losses due to insect-pests. With increase in the incidence of aphids, termites and some newly emerged pests like pink stem borer etc. the grain yield losses due to insect-pests in wheat have steadily increased. Last year, mild and prolonged winters at the end of wheat crop was highly favourable for the growth and development of wheat aphids and other insect in wheat, but at the same time, suitable control measure taken by farmers at proper timeresulted record production of wheat in Punjab. The correct identification of insect pest, knowledge of their economic threshold levels and timely application of insecticides can reduce the quantum of losses caused by different insect pests in wheat andbarley.
