ALCOHOLIC MEDICINE : A SPECIAL DIVISION OF MODERN MEDICINE

During a visit by an authoritative person, a retired I.C.S. officer and fine, Parsi gentleman, to our Indian Institute of Experimental Medicine (CSIR), his very first question, to me was "What is Experimental Medicine?" As I was about to explain to him what is Medicine, he became impatient and remarked—-"I know what is Medicine." In my characteristic way of talking with omniscient persons, my reply was, "Sir, if you know what is 'Medicine' then my answar is very simple, 'Experimental Medicine' is experimental 'Medicine'." Then I could explain the position, that according to layman 'Medicine' means drugs for treatment of diseases, but to us it means—the science of diseases including their treatment, and 'Experimental Medicine' covers studies on experimentally produced diseases and their treatment.
