'Rehabilitation ... A Key Word in Medicine': The Legacy of Dr. Frank H. Krusen

Most physiatrists recognize Frank H. Krusen, MD, as an early pioneer in the establishment of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) as a medical specialty and also as "the father of physical medicine" (Figure 1). Some physiatrists remember his scholarly contributions, most notably through his numerous contributions to the medical literature on the use of therapeutic modalities in medicine, and his foundational textbook, Physical Medicine, published in 1941, and subsequently titled, Kmsen's Handbook oj Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (the 4th and last edition was published in 1990) [1]. Few physiatrists, however, fully appreciate Krusen's other enduring contributions to the field of PM&R. His prescient vision also focused the field on education, research, and collaboration with other colleagues in medicine and rehabilitation services, a framework for professional activities that remains relevant for PM&R in the 21st century.
