The delayed coker or coke drum forms an integral part of the delayed coking unit in a modern refinery plant. The coke drum is a cyclic vessel subjected to complex loading, consisting of varying temperature and pressure cycles. This article highlights some of the operating challenges encountered in coke drum operation, and the causes for these.
