More than 25 intense years have elapsed since the pioneering articles on molecular epidemiology were published (Perera and Weinstein, 1982; Weinstein 1983) and about 20 since the first textbooks came out (Hulka et al., 1990; Schulte and Perera, 1993; Toniolo et al., 1997; Vineis et al., 1999; Carrington and Hoelzel, 2001). Happily, the obsolescence of some sections of the precursor books is extensive; such is the distance with the protagonist of this review. The book shows the substantial progress that has been accomplished, and in particular how epidemiologic reasoning, knowledge and methods have increased the capacity of other contemporary biological sciences to integrate reasoning, knowledge and methods from multiple population, clinical and microbiological disciplines.
