American women spend about 50% of their lifespans trying to prevent pregnancy. A typical woman spends about 39 years of her life with the potential to become pregnant.Women currently have many contraceptive options to choose from to prevent pregnancy, allowing them to plan desired pregnancies. The choice of which contraceptive method to use depends on several factors, including patterns of sexual behavior, desires and pattems of childbearing, access to care, and cost. All of these factors are dynamic and change over a woman's lifespan. Although there is a substantial amount of literature that addresses contraceptive choices for women, little evidence exists on the subject as it pertains to special populations, including those with intellectual disabilities.
