Researchers work to produce aphid-resistant bean varieties

THIS year, farmers in the Midwest are growing a new variety of soybeans that is resistant to aphids. The variety was developed by University of Illinois researchers. However, in addition to the resistant plants, U of I researchers discovered a new soybean aphid that is not controlled by this resistance. Soybean aphids first appeared in North America in the summer of 2000, resulting in tremendous crop losses for farmers. U of I researchers immediately began searching for a variety of soybean resistant to the new pest.
