Chinese P&P industry to face higher minimum charges on pollutant emissions from next year

Chinese pulp and paper producers may face higher charges for emissions, as the country has decided to double current industrial pollution fees to address serious environmental issues and encourage cleaner production. Three governmental organizations - the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) - jointly issued a circular earlier this month, indicating that the rises will target sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide in industrial exhaust, and chemical oxygen demand levels (COD), ammonia nitrogen and five metal elements in waste water.
