A good example of successful crisis management: The avian influenza outbreak in Chile

In May 2002, there was a severe outbreak of avian influenza in Chile. Six months later, the poultry industry was declared influenza-free. In late May 2002, Chilean broiler producer Agricola Ariztia noticed high mortality rates at one of its broiler breeder complexes. It quickly notified the rest of the industry and the Chilean government. The Agriculture Service (SAG), an agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, created an Emergency Committee to take charge of the problem. Working jointly with Ariztia, the committee's first move was to convene international experts.
