The importance of early gut development in broilers

Health and performance throughout life are influenced by the early stages in the development of the gastrointestinal tract. The authors explain how the gut develops in the embryo and the young chick, particularly its contribution to the bird's overallimmunocompetence. Young modern breeds of broilers have been selected over many years for fast growth and development. In order to ensure initial growth targets are met in the first week of life, optimal development of the intestines and digestive organsis essential. Understanding the development of the gut and factors that can improve it are key to maximising the number of young chicks reared and ensuring they get the best start. It will improve the uniformity of the flock as well as improving the intestinal health and allowing correct development of an acquired immune system and its correct response to the antigens taken in by the bird in its feed and from its environment.
